Q. Can First Aid courses be shortened?
A: No, their timeframes are established by the WSIB – beware of people who offer you shortened course since it means that their training does not meet the correct requirements.
Q. I want to take CPR and AED training, but am afraid that if I help somebody and they don’t survive then I will be in trouble.
A. If you help someone in Ontario in an emergency situation then you are protected by our Bill 20, also known as the Good Samaritan Law, which protects you providing that you behave reasonably, stay within the First Aid guidelines and act without expectation of compensation or reward.
Q. I am not clear on the difference between Emergency and Standard First Aid courses.
A. As outlined on our
, an Emergency First Aid course is one day of training, 8 hours including break times, while a Standard First Aid course is two days, 16 hours including break times.
Q. What should I bring with me to a CPR renewal class?
A. You should bring your previous CPR card also, keep in mind that you would renew through the agency that originally trained you e.g. Red Cross or Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Q. My Standard First Aid card has already expired, but can I still take the one day renewal for that?
A. No, WSIB allows you to attend the one day Standard First Aid renewal only if your previous card is still current i.e. is still within the three year period. You must have taken the full course the last time that you took the training, you must renew through the agency that originally trained you e.g. Red Cross and you must bring the card to the class. If all of those points are not met, then you must take the two day course again.
